Summer 2012

Differential Geometry of Surfaces

Conceptual Design

  • Historical models are used to explore the differential geometry of surfaces.
  • Each student adopts a particular model.
  • The student explains a certain topic of the seminar (e.g., Gauss-maps or curvatures) based on his model.
  • A learning diary documents the research on the model.
  • At the end of the seminar, each student gives a second talk that addresses the topics of the other talks with respect to the adopted model.

Example: Learning Steps for the Topic of the Gauss Map

1. Explaining the Gauss map on a model
