University Certificate "Competences for Sustainable Development"

The LINE-cooperation strives to empower students to analyze complex societal problems from multiple perspectives, to scrutinize quantitative models that address these problems, and to develop, evaluate, and evolve solution strategies based on this assessment.

The certificate „Competences for Sustainable Development“ is established as a cross-sectional program for students from all study programs of the university.

To start with all students follow a Grundlagenmodul with a Ringvorlesung and two Practice seminars. This course introduces some basic concepts based examples of current research.

In a subsequent supplementary course they develop their skills exemplary by following a relevant course in a foreign study program.

Finally, they employ their new competences by working on a multi-disciplinary group project (in the spirit of a living lab).

While working on this program the students will develop the competences of

• communicate insights based on their field of study in such a way that it can be understood by non-specialists (professional competence, social competence);
• assess their insights from the multiple new perspectives based on input from peers and team members with different background (self competence), and provide constructive feedback to the insights of others (social competence);
• develop independent learning and self-employed actions (method competence).

The course contributes to establishing an integrated, cross-disciplinary STEAM education at the Universität Leipzig.
