Abstract: In General Relativity it is common practice to assume that the stress-energy tensor of the matter content satisfies an "energy condition", for example, that the energy density is nonnegative to all observers. The energy conditions serve as the hypotheses on which many of the classical results of general relativity (e.g., singularity theorems) are proved. On the other hand, quantum field theories are incapable of satisfying energy conditions of this type and indeed there are experimentally well-tested situations, such as the Casimir effect, in which quantum field theory predicts that states with long-lasting negative energy density occur. In these lectures we will review the classical energy conditions and their violation by quantum fields, drawing parallels with other areas in mathematical physics where similar phenomena occur (e.g., Weyl-Wigner quantisation). We will also describe mathematically rigorous constraints on the quantised stress-energy tensor, known as quantum energy inequalities, which are proved by using techniques drawn from microlocal analysis. We also outline a number of their consequences including applications to thermodynamics and the analysis of spacetimes with exotic structures, such as "wormholes". Finally, it is shown how quantum energy inequalities can be used together with covariance principles to obtain a priori bounds on a number of situations including the Casimir effect with arbitrary geometry.
