Arrival with plane at Leipzig-Halle airport or train at
Leipzig main station
After arrival at the airport look for signs to the Airport
train station. If you feel it's a long walk - then you are on the
right track! Every 30 minutes there is a direct train connection
to the main station ("Hauptbahnhof") in the city center.
You can buy your ticket
either at a ticket counter (still in the airport building) just
before you move down to the tracks, or downstairs at a ticket
machine. Tickets for the regional trains ("RE") are also valid
for changing to the tram at Hauptbahnhof (at least within the
city limits). Long distance trains ("IC"), which also every now
and then connect the airport and the main train station, require
a special, much more expensive ticket (which furthermore is not
valid on the trams from Hauptbahnhof).
From the main train station ("Hauptbahnhof") you
can take the tram
no. 15 to our
"Vor dem Hospitaltore 1" resp. "Prager Str." close to "Ostplatz" (look
for the blue circle no. 34 on the r.h.s. of this
which is the fourth stop after a
7 minutes ride. With the
train station in your back, the proper direction of the tram towards
"Meusdorf" is to your left. (The tram
no. 12 follows the same route but often
ends after the second stop at Johannisplatz (all trams labeled with a "J" on
the time table), so this option is not recommended.)
Since you travel only four stops, you can take a "short-ride ticket"
("Kurzstrecke") or just use your RE train ticket from the airport.

Alternatively, you may first enjoy a 5-10 minutes walk along

You get them at the back entrance of the concert hall "Gewandhaus" close to
no. 23 on the
as described in more detail
From there you can reach the Institute by
an even shorter tram ride (5 min) again with tram
(the tram stop is in the middle of Augustusplatz - just in between the Opera
building and the concert hall "Gewandhaus"; see
the map) or
by a 10-15 minutes walk along Prager Strasse.
The Institute is located on the first and
the secretaries' office is on the side of the elevators in room
1L-24, phone (0341) 97 32 420 or 430.
You may also try to contact
Wolfhard Janke (room 1L-21, phone (0341) 97 32 725), or
on the side opposite to the elevators
Michael Bachmann (room 1R-20, phone (0341) 97 32 443), or
Elmar Bittner (room 1R-21, phone (0341) 97 32 429).
For the way back from the Institute towards the city center or the main train station, the
time schedules are given here for no. 15 (and
no. 12 which, however, also in this direction does only
run during peak hours).
The most important meeting places are marked on the map
with a blue circle:
Talks, Posters and Coffee ("Kleiner Hörsaal", Inst. for Experimental Physics, Linnestr. 5) = no. 38;
Institute for Theoretical Physics, close to Ostplatz = no. 34;
"Hauptbahnhof" = main train station.
The Hotels are marked with a blue filled square with a "R"
at Täubchenweg at the right-hand side on this map
(Hotel Garni and Hotel Mercure Gutenbergplatz).
