The Quantum Gallery

The pictures exhibited here have been created in March/April 1995 in the consequence of the lectures in quantum mechanics. They show the angular distribution of the electronic probability density in the corresponding hydrogen orbit. This type of graphic representation is called a "polar diagram" and was often published in a 2D-projection. The 3D-images presented to the right on the desired page have been calculated using a technique called ray tracing which is the basic algorithm for the creation of VR (virtual reality) images. On the left you will see a wireframe "model" of the corresponding distribution. The intersections of the horizontal and vertical lines define patches. The edges of those have been smoothed by a special algorithm, that interpolates the normals over the patch from an edge to the opposite one. Doing this way the VR image gets a homogenous surface.
